"The township is so diverse and so large, it's hard to get everyone together," says Patrick Karnash, event coordinator for Hempfield Community Days. The festival, which takes place this Saturday and Sunday at Hempfield Park, "was originally intended as a way for the township supervisors to give something back to the residents. It's a way to get the community together."

Every year, the festival attracts around 15,000 visitors with its free concerts, fireworks, food, vendors and children's activities. This year, Hempfield Community Days promises to draw even more people with its expanded offerings.

The festival is "growing in every respect," Karnash says. The car show is bigger, the fireworks will be more impressive and there will be more vendor booths to visit. The 45 or so booths, arranged along the shady paved paths of the park, will offer crafts such as handmade jewelry, dolls, face painting and Native American dreamcatchers, as well as commercial displays by Coca-Cola, Best Buy and other sponsors. Food vendors will offer everything from corn dogs and funnel cakes to the popular fresh-cut french fries made by the Adamsburg Fire MBT shoes Department.

A favorite attraction for young families is the Kids' Zone, which this year is triple the size of previous years and includes additional activities for older children. "Families are the demographic we are looking for," Karnash says. "Most of the new people moving into the township are people with young children."

Kids' Zone will have nine inflatable structures, games, an obstacle course and crafts. For a small fee, children are admitted to all Kids' Zone activities.

Additional children's activities will be provided by the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library. Diane Ciabattoni of the circulation staff says the library will have "an informational booth with children's activities. We'll have a craft, a tattoo, a game with prizes, balloons and a book raffle," all free. Adults and children can register to win one of four books, two for adults and two for kids. Every year, the library staff looks forward to hosting the activities.

"We enjoy it," Ciabattoni says. "It's nice to get out and provide a service to the community."

The free concerts and entertainment top off the festival's offerings. Saturday's special features are the Chris Higbee Project country music concert at 8:15 p.m. followed by a Zambelli fireworks show that will be the festival's largest one yet.

Highlights for Sunday begin with a car show from 2 to 5 p.m. with more than 100 vehicles expected. Johnny Angel and the Halos will present an oldies concert from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Cameron met with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on July 27, and during a press conference the two held described Gaza as a "prison camp."

During a Shabbat sermon at St John's Wood synagogue this weekend, Sacks urged Cameron to maintain "balance" when discussing the Middle East.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO ALL THESE DIFFERENT FORMS OF MUSIC?

I've always loved music. As a kid, my parents would always have on these great jazz musicians. They made sure we all got music lessons. My sisters and I were all initially forced to play piano. Then my parents gave in and let me take drum lessons. ... They'd take me to different concerts and cultural events.

HOW DID YOU COME TO PLAY WITH THE GRATEFUL DEAD?

I was in the right place at the right time. That was a total fluke. ... I was on stage at the end of their concert they did in Buffalo, playing percussion with probably 20 other college students. The drummer just dropped off the chair. He was high as a kite, just laughing and stuff. I picked up the drumsticks and played for seven to eight minutes. That would have been 1971. It's a pretty wild story.

IS THERE A SPIRITUAL DIMENSION TO THE MUSIC, EVEN THE RAP?

In Hasidic terms, how the Torah refers to music, it's called the language of the soul. It makes these deep, inner connections for people. ... Music is a great way to reach people and to teach people. I try to reach out to Jews and Gentiles with that message - to be proud of who you are and to do positive things with your life.

WHAT'S YOUR TALK GOING TO BE ABOUT SUNDAY NIGHT?

I'm going to share stories from when I taught in the inner city. My day job is working with special ed kids, which is one of my loves. I've seen what music can do for that population. It's just phenomenal.

I have, and I'll never forget the first time.

It was the night during the winter of 1986-87 I saw Calvin Talford sail across a basketball floor in a Castlewood High School basketball uniform.

He had just missed a shot on the other end, hesitated because he thought he had been fouled, then sprinted upcourt when no call was made. A Gate City High player took a jump shot at the other end. Talford had no chance to block the shot, but he tried anyway, soaring 20-some feet in the air like a Nike-wearing comet.

He didn't get any leather, but there was a loud thud. It was my jaw hitting the bleachers because I had just witnessed the most spectacular high school athlete I've ever seen.

-- He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies after a prep baseball career that included a home run on the first pitch of the game in the Region C semifinals.

-- He came out for football as a senior and scored all five of his team's touchdowns in a playoff victory over Fort Chiswell.

The 6-foot-4 Talford -- the 1988 Timesland male athlete of the year -- had absurd leaping ability. He led East Tennessee State to four NCAA tournament berths and won the collegiate slam dunk title in 1992. He played professionally overseas, dunking on five continents.

Later this month, Talford will finally get a well-deserved spot in the Virginia High School Hall of Fame, entering with a class that includes NFL star Thomas Jones (Powell Valley) and Blacksburg soccer coach Shelley Blumenthal.

Talford was a show-stopper. At the 1988 Region C track meet, he somehow wound up in a one-on-one impromptu dunk contest on a goal behind the stands at Auburn High School.

The meet was still going on, but hardly anyone cared. Most of the spectators were standing on the top row watching the show outside the stadium.

Soon Talford will be inside the VHSL Hall.

JERUSALEM, July 14 (Xinhua) -- A Libyan vessel carrying aid for Gazans has resumed travel as of noon Wednesday, after it stopped due to reported engine trouble overnight, an Israeli army spokesman told mens burberry watches Xinhua.

However, organizers said they still planned to reach the Palestinian enclave, despite latest reports to the contrary.

"First and foremost, we want to arrive to Gaza. If this is impossible, we don't want to subject anyone to danger," Youssef Sawani, an official with the Gaddafi International Charity and Development Foundation who was in contact with the boat, told al- Jazeera television.

The Israeli Defense Forces spokesperson told Xinhua that the Navy had offered to escort the craft to the Israeli port of Ashdod, and offload its foodstuffs for overland transfer to Gaza via the Karni crossing point.

The Israeli Navy said that it continues to track the vessel's progress, in order to head off any last-minute turn towards the Gaza coast.

Earlier, the organizers of the ship said the vessel was " cordoned" by Israeli warships which were trying to force it to change destination to the el-Arish port.

"Four (Israeli) naval vessels are showing up on each side of the Porsche Design Watches ship," a statement by Gaddafi International Charity and Development Foundation said.

"The ship is moving at a slower pace as the Israeli naval vessels are trying to force it ti change course," the statement posted on the organization's website said, adding that the freighter received threats from the Israeli warships.

The United States and European Union had earlier urged the Libyans not to confront the Israeli military on the high seas, but rather dock the craft at an Egyptian or Israeli port, in order to transfer the food and goods overland to the Gaza Strip.

"We... have urged all those wishing to deliver goods to do so through established channels so their cargo can be inspected by the government of Israel and transferred by land crossings into Gaza," U.S. State Department spokesman Phillip Crowley told reporters on Tuesday, adding that parties must "act responsibly."

Israeli naval special operations team intercepted a Gaza-bound flotilla on May 31, ended with nine passengers killed and dozens of other including nine Israeli soldiers wounded.

While tailing the Libyan ship, the army has vowed to intercept the aid boat if it approaches the Palestinian enclave.

What is behind this smart entrance? The door in the wall reveals fleeting, charming vistas from the street.

The Pynes designed and built their home 20 years ago, adding outdoor features that they especially liked in their daughter's house: brick pillars, raised flower beds and large beams extending from the house on the sunny northern side, sloping on the same camber as the roof. That made for the bones of a courtyard garden, a nice setting for the outdoor living that is a feature of this family's life on fine days.

The house faces north, so the raised garden against the boundary wall receives filtered light in different strengths throughout the day, ideal for plants that don't like to be baked. It has a special charm in springtime, when first the daphne, and then the trilliums, bergenia, Solomon's seal, hostas and Japanese anemone fill the bed.

Clipped box hedging runs along the back of this border, dotted with a couple of espaliered "Debbie" camellias. Their luscious bluey- pink flowers were "all the rage 20 years ago", Colleen smiles, "but the pink is at its best in the shade".

The south side of the courtyard, backed by the house and facing into the sun, is lit up by bright spots of colour, flower baskets of trailing blue lobelia suspended from the beams, cream violas and plum pansies in one raised bed, and in another, the late- flowering, musky-scented stocks.

At this time of the year and throughout the winter, the bare, fan- shaped branches of Tilia cordata arrest the eye, and beyond that wall, in the contrasting lawn-filled space of the back yard, the tilias line up again against the eastern boundary. They are easy care, Colleen says, bred to espalier and to stay flat. Their branches just reach the top of the fence, but no higher.

There are several interesting trees on this 605 square metre section: a ginkgo in the courtyard, a four-metre clipped blue cedar (Cedrus atlantica glauca), Magnolia "Iolanthe" dropping her petals on the drive, and beside the courtyard gate, a golden Italian pencil cypress. Despite changing fashions over the decades, this tree is arresting against the house because its form has been religiously maintained, even to the extent of binding it with invisible fishing line to hold its shape.

The bedrooms and their respective ensuites are something of a triumph in terms of space, luxury and design.

Enjoying sun, garden views and well-appointed ensuites, each has considerable charm, beaten only by a slim margin by the master suite with its hand-painted feature wall in an antique white Clip on charms and grey blue regency stripe.

In an area where beautiful homes are the rule rather than the exception, this one manages to still be exceptional. All 640sqm of it has been fastidiously decorated with an eye for detail, colour and form.

ALICIA Marriott began the summer by edging out Hayley Bateup in arguably the closest finish in Coolangatta Gold history.

And the scene has been set for the two queens of the surf to renew their rivalry at Sydney in two weeks time.

Kurrawa's Bateup finished second behind Northcliffe's Elizabeth Pluimers in round four of the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Series at Alexandra Headland yesterday, with Mooloolaba's Marriott close behind in third.

It means Bateup holds a slender two-point advantage over Marriott in the overall standings, setting up a grandstand finish in the double points final round at Cronulla on February 21.

In pounding two metre waves that caused bedlam at times, Marriott made her move on the second swim leg and found a timely wave on the final ski leg to keep pace with Bateup and set up a grandstand series finish in a fortnight's time.

"Some of the girls in front of me actually fell off their skis, but then the wave came and I went for it," Marriott said.

"It's very taxing on your body in these conditions, doing leg after leg and trying to hold your breath in these kind of waves.

"I haven't had a lot of practice in those type of waves because it's usually so flat here on the Sunshine Coast.

"It's good the surf picked up again this weekend because it makes it much more exciting."

Marriott said moving during the winter from Perth to the Sunshine Coast is a big factor in links of london charms her strong form.

"I'm not a big fan of flying as it is and flying the day before a race really takes it out of you, both mentally and physically," she said.

After a disappointing performance in round three, Pluimers hit back in the best possible way to keep herself in contention for the series title.

"I was so angry with myself yesterday," she said.

"I made a few mistakes and had a lot of unlucky things happen as well.

"I had a sit down with everyone; even my mum and dad gave me the tough love and said 'you've got to go back out there', so I'm glad I stuck around for today."

In other Sunshine Coast results, Met Caloundra's Rebecca Creedy and Mooloolaba's Allira Richardson finished sixth and seventh respectively.

On the day of hearts and love, the parents of the last Lynn University student still missing in Haiti finally heard the news from the U.S. State Department that their daughter's body had been found, and she was coming home.

Amid their grief, Len and Cheryl-ann Gengel of Rutland, Mass., had the composure on Sunday to express thanks to those who had helped find her remains in the ruins of the Hotel Montana on a hillside overlooking Port-au-Prince.

"Even though our hearts are breaking, we are so grateful to the men and women who have worked at the Hotel Montana for the past 33 days," the Gengels wrote in a note distributed by Lynn University, where their daughter had been a sophomore.

Britney Gengel had been among 12 students and two faculty on a three-week program the university called "Journey of Hope." It was meant to inspire the students to charity and provide help to Haiti's poor.

They had spent the day visiting an orphanage on the day the earthquake struck.

Eight of them returned safely, because most had been sitting outside by the pool, writing in journals about all they had seen.

Four of their friends, along with their professors, had gone back inside shortly before the hotel collapsed.

The eight survivors clung together and trekked to the U.S. ambassador's home. From there they moved to the U.S. Embassy lawn, and finally were transported to the Dominican Republic and evacuated home via private jet. Meanwhile, the fate of their six colleagues was uncertain and grim.

Days of fearful hope stretched into weeks of anger and anguish as family pleaded on national television for results. The Gengels, who had initially believed their daughter had survived, tearfully demanded the missing Americans not be abandoned to the rubble. Britney, recovered Sunday, was the last to be found.

The school announced an on-campus ceremony celebrating their lives and accomplishments would be held on a date to be determined.

Lynn University President Kevin M. Ross called Britney Gengel "a true inspiration."

"She was a beautiful young woman who gave her life serving others. We will miss her terribly," Ross said.

In their statement, Len and Cherylann Gengel called Britney their valentine, and thanked the many rescue workers and elected officials, including Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who advocated for their daughter's rescue and recovery.

An hour before the quake hit, Britney had phoned her mother to say she felt she had found her calling in life, after touring the orphanage. She had been so excited about the trip.

"We sat with her before she left and talked about this trip being a life-changing event. We never knew that this trip would change our lives and hers forever," the Gengels wrote.

Other students whose remains have been found include Christine Gianacaci, 22, a sophomore from Hopewell, N.J, Courtney Hayes, 23, of Douglas, Ga. and Stephanie Crispinelli, 19, a sophomore from Katonah, NY.

Two members of the Lynn University faculty, Dr. Richard Bruno, 59, and Lynn education school dean Patrick Hartwick, 53, have also been confirmed dead.
