Koons cleared to compete

Special to the Press Herald

VANCOUVER -- His Winter Olympics debut will come five days later than planned, but Ben Koons is good Clip on charms to go today.

A Messalonskee High School and Dartmouth College graduate from Sidney, Koons will compete in cross country skiing for his native New Zealand at Whistler Olympic Park. The men's 30-kilometer pursuit -- Koons' primary event -- consists of 15 kilometers using the classic style and 15K freestyle.

"My plan is to go out there and ski my hardest race," he said Friday night. "Leave it all on the course and see what happens.

"This is kind of the one I've been focusing on from the start. It would have been nice to get a couple under my belt to get the pre-race jitters out of the way, but now I'll be extra fresh for tomorrow."

Koons, 23, was scheduled to competed in Monday's 15K freestyle, but was barred from competition for five days because his hemoglobin level tested high. He was one of a dozen Nordic skiers who were issued a "start prohibition" by the International Ski Federation (FIS). The five-day ban also kept Koons out of Wednesday's individual sprint.

"I was pretty disappointed that I didn't get to start early, but now it's just a relief and I'm looking forward to getting the start," he said.

Koons said he has not tested high for hemoglobin levels before and that it was "great news" when he was well within the acceptable range links of london charms when re-tested Thursday.

An FIS statement noted that the "start prohibition is not a sanction, but is in order to protect the health of the athlete."

Hemoglobin is the protein molecule in red blood cells that carry oxygen.

"I was surprised with the first test because I was tested unofficially several days before and I was low," Koons said. "But I guess at the time of the first official test, when I tested over. I was probably a little dehydrated."

Koons, a 6-foot-2, 196-pounder, was born in Dunedin, New Zealand. He is a dual citizen of his homeland and the United States. Parents Jean and Peter, plus sister Linnea will be among 10-to-15 local "friends and family" supporters on site Saturday, along with 20 or so New Zealanders.

He says he is "definitely more of a classic skier, so I'll be planning on going out hard early in the race ... and then when it comes to skating, just try to keep going."

"It's a pretty hilly course, very technical. Some fast, technical downs, which I tend to like, and then there are big, long, consistent climbs in the classic course."

Leading contenders include world champion and World Cup leader Petter Northug of Norway, 15K freestyle gold-medalist Dario Cologna of Switzerland and bronze-medalist Lukas Bauer of the Czech Republic.

Kookas address security concer

TOOWOOMBA'S Kiel Brown is putting aside any self apprehension and will stand by officialdom as Australia's mens' hockey team prepares for a knife-edge tour of India.

links of london charms

The 18-member Kookaburra's squad is due to leave Australia tomorrow bound for New Delhi to compete in the World Cup from February 28 to March 13.

The tour has already attracted unprecedented attention surrounding the security of a travelling Australian sport team following alleged terrorist threats to target the tournament.

Reports claim the al-Qaeda terrorist group has warned countries not to send athletes to this year's hockey World Cup, Commonwealth Games or Indian Premier League cricket tournament.

The security threats prompted Hockey Australia to release separate statements on consecutive days this week, responding to concerns and confirming its intention to proceed with the Kookaburra's tour.

Brown last year said he would be reluctant to put himself in a life-threatening situation in the name of sport.

He expressed his concerns for player safety after an extremist attack in Mumbai claimed the lives of 140 civilians.

A prime target of the terrorist attack was the Taj Mahal Hotel - a popular stopover in India for touring sport teams.

"At the end of the day it's a game of hockey and it's not worth the risk," Brown said last January.

This week he cautiously backed Hockey Australia's decision to proceed with the Kookaburra's Cup campaign claiming players would heed expert security advice on their safety.

"I think there will always be a little doubt in the minds of individuals," Brown said.

"And until we receive a full brief on the situation players and staff are a little in the dark.

"But if we do go on Sunday I will have full confidence in the decision of the Foreign Affairs Department surrounding our safety."

Brown's return to the national squad follows a disappointing end to 2009 when he missed selection in Australia's Champions Trophy- winning team.

The 25-year-old defender is now treating that missed tournament as a plus.

"It was disappointing to miss the Champions Trophy but on the upside it's given me six months to overcome some injury issues and get my body right," Brown said this week from Perth where the Kookaburras are playing New Zealand in two World Cup warm-up matches.

Australia triumphed 7-1 in Wednesday's first game.

"It's all business now and everything is peaking well for the tour," Brown said.

"This if the first World Cup for a lot of the guys, including myself, and there is a lot of excitement amongst the boys in what shapes as a busy year for us."

"I touched my face and then I saw all the blood."

He said: "I went over to have a word with the guy who had done it. There were about seven of them."

But Mr Tester wants more to be done.

Sliding with heavy hearts

WHISTLER, British Columbia - Someone had to be first, and it was Tony Benshoof.

Overlooking a labyrinth that claimed the life of one of his competitors a day earlier, Benshoof, the top U.S. medal hope in men's luge, drew a breath of mountain air, secured the visor over his face and dropped down this elevator shaft of ice not knowing what to expect.

Mulberry Replica Handbags

He glided to the bottom, slower but safer. And that's all that mattered.

The Olympic sliding track, slightly modified to make it less perilous and more than 5 mph slower for racers, reopened Saturday less than 24 hours after Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili died in a horrifying crash not likely to be forgotten by anyone who witnessed it on Blackcomb Mountain or on television.

For Benshoof, there was no time to mourn.

"Unfortunately, there was a terrible tragedy," said Benshoof, a three-time Olympian competing with at least three herniated discs, plus an aching foot from a brush with the Whistler track wall on Friday. "But at the end of the day we have a competition to go through and I tried to put it all out of my head."

That was almost impossible.

Reminders of Kumaritashvili's death seemed everywhere - from the reconfigured final curve and raised wall, to the black tape stuck to the helmets of some athletes. Flowers were left by the base of a steel beam that he struck near the 16th turn. There was also a card with the inscription, "Just like gold, your dream will live forever."

A moment of silence was held before the first heat of the men's competition in memory of Kumaritashvili. Replica A Lange & Sohne Watch His photo was displayed on a video scoreboard.

"It's still fresh in our hearts," said Shiva Keshavan from India. "We're not able to compete with that same joy."

Kumaritashvili's teammate, Levan Gureshidze, did not race. He was on the official start list for the first heat but withdrew.

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge attended the competition with Vancouver organizing chief John Furlong. Before Benshoof pushed down the starting ramp and cleanly navigated through the 16-turn course, luge officials announced the men would begin at the women's start, a decision they hoped would reduce speeds and lessen the chance for accidents.

International Luge Federation officials said the start change for the men - three turns below normal - was made with the "emotional component" of athletes in mind following the death Replica Ebel Watch of the 21-year- old from the former Soviet republic.

It wasn't the only switch: Later, officials said the women's and doubles competitions will start even lower, at the junior start position, between the fifth and sixth curves.

The men began their two-day competition with a clean first heat, with all 38 racers completing their runs.

Italy's two-time defending gold medalist, Armin Zoeggeler, who crashed on Friday not long before Kumaritashvili's fatal spill, was third after the first heat, behind Germans Felix Loch and David Moeller. Benshoof was seventh.

Santa and His Amazing Customer Relationship Management Program

By:Peter George

It's December, and you would think that Santa's work is just getting started But Santa, being the world's greatest marketer, begins working on the upcoming year on December 26 I suppose he gets a good night's sleep after he gets back from his ride around the world; he may have even slept in the next morning But you can be sure that once he gets up, he gets right to work And if he can't take time off from his marketing efforts, how can anyone of us?

First of all, Santa has a brand, and everything he does enforces that brand Could it be that you don't think that there is a brand Santa? Well pull up an ice block, have a seat, and we'll take a look If I asked you to name who delivers gifts to children, who would be at the top of your mind? Santa Claus, right? Of course there are others; FedEx and UPS make deliveries, too But then again, how many five year olds are going to say FedEx?

Since Santa doesn't have printed materials or similar collateral, he utilizes other features to differentiate between himself and his competition Instead of a large box van, he drives a big, red sleigh His uniform of choice is a red suit with white fur trim His trademark beard is equaled only by his hearty laugh And his logo is his own image (I wonder if that's where Colonel Sanders got the idea)

Managing relationships
Let's take a look at everything he will have to accomplish this year His most important asset is his contact list, and it's forever evolving He has to know who is to be added; who is to be deleted Just as important as the contacts themselves is the knowledge he has about each of those contacts This includes, but certainly isn't limited to, such things as: interests, likes and dislikes, hobbies, accomplishments, family members, and how his previous interactions with each one of them panned out His success is based on a never-ending commitment to the fact that everything is about them not him T8 LED Tube.

Similarly, you should be always be updating your contacts and the information you have about them As with many things in life, the little things mean a lot So, if at all possible, do what you can to learn about your contacts' spouses, children, hobbies, and anything else you deem valuable Did his business achieve its revenue goal for the year? Did she reduce her expenditures as she had planned? How is competition affecting his company?

Once you have this information, use it! The next time you are with a client who enjoys boats, ask him if he will be attending the upcoming boat shows Better yet, buy tickets and drop them in the mail If a customer loves to cruise the Caribbean, and you read an article about the world's newest, largest ship, be sure to send it to her And when she takes a cruise, make sure you ask her about it when she gets back

Giving leads to receiving
To Santa, it's all about giving, and to a great extent, that's exactly how you should think especially in business The more you give to your clients, the more you're likely to get back Customers look for many different things when the determine value of a product or service Of course one of them is customer service Yet many of us believe that extreme customer service -- the kind that makes customers not only take notice but also tell others about it -- is a myth No it's not, and those who want to take advantage of it have a tremendous opportunity

Then again, extreme customer service is not easy Wholesale Leather Handbags. It's planned, tracked, and redeveloped as needed Santa knows this, and he spends what others would consider an inordinate amount of time working on it He realizes that the results he reaps at the end of the year are based on the planning he sows at the beginning of it

Don't forget Rudolph
We all know that Santa relies on many reindeer to get him around the globe in one night And we can learn a lesson from this fact Many of us can name the nine well-known reindeer, but when asked to name only one, the vast majority of us name Rudolph Why? Because this smart little reindeer has branded himself

His unique value proposition -- how he differs from his fellow reindeer and the benefit that difference offers -- is known to all of us Fake Designer Watches. He is the only one with a red nose that glows, meaning he can lead Santa's sleigh through stormy weather He also has his own song and television show And, although others, such as Olive the Other Reindeer, have tried to do the same, they just haven't been able to capitalize the way Rudolph has Who ever thought that a reindeer would be an example for businesses of all sizes?
