Ironman Peter is champ at 76

Byline: NICK LAVIGUEUR

MOST men his age have long since hung up their running shoes.

But 76-year-old triathlete Peter Howard is still going strong and beating the world's best senior athletes.

The retired youth worker took up the sport, which combines swimming, cycling and running in 1984, winning himself "drawers full of medals" along the way.

Now 25 years on he has won national championships at every age replica rolex group from 50 to 75, still trains at Huddersfield gym Total Fitness every single day and still travels the globe competing against the world's best.

Only this year the Wakefield Triathlon Club member took first place in the over-70s category at the British Championships and notched podium positions at events in Australia.

He said: "I've not competed in Russia or South America, but practically every other country.

"I've been to Australia three times, New Zealand twice, America, Canada and most countries in Europe."

At an event on Australia's Gold Coast last September he competed alongside the current world champion, Alistair Brownlee and against an elite field of over 70-year-olds claiming a silver medal.

But the highlight of his career happened only a couple of months ago in Perth, Australia, when he took home the gold medal in a long course event.

He said: "To come away with the gold was quite an achievement.

"I must fake rolex say to stand on the top of the podium with the national anthem playing and the flag flying was quite a nice feeling."

Peter said his finest moment was also going to be his swansong and the Perth gold was his last full length race.

With his career finally winding down Peter said he wanted to encourage more people to take up the multi-discipline sport.

He added: "Sometimes people are put off triathlon thinking it's a difficult thing to do.

"They're thinking about Ironmans, but in actual fact there's a lot of short distance events which a lot of people would have no problem with at all."

Iraq, the home of courtesy

WHICH is the politest nation on Earth? I'm glad you asked. Turns out it's Iraq.

This week Muntadar al-Zaidi, the man who threw his shoes at George Bush, was released from prison to largely positive reviews. According to reports, however, there were some Iraqis who felt that his action had been "impolite".

Wow. That is some old-world courtesy right there: "Listen, Muntadar, Mr Bush has illegally invaded and occupied our country and since he's here that makes him a guest in our house. So be nice."

Inventor says shoe adds pep to

SOUTH SHORE ENTREPRENEUR - HARRY SHAMIR

If the shoe fits, wear it - then go exercise with it. Plymouth entrepreneur Harry Shamir recently developed a prototype of an exercise shoe that he says adds a new dimension to its wearer's workout.

"It's a type of shoe that looks and smells and tastes and weighs and feels like any other good sneaker, or exercise shoe," said Shamir, a 71-year-old who teaches fencing and is a mechanical engineering consultant. "The difference is, in addition to being comfortable, it also induces the wearer to actually exercise a little more during a walk or a jog."

Shamir declined to reveal the specifics of the element that he adds to a shoe to force its wearer to expend more energybecause he is still going through the patent process. "There is a calorie- expending mechanism so that weight loss will be experienced throughout the whole body," Shamir said.

replica clothing

Shamir, who calls his innovation TREXS (True Exercise Shoe), has approached New Balance in Brighton in hopes of having that company work with him in manufacturing the shoe.

"Harry's is a very interesting concept, and we're still evaluating it," said Edward Haddad, vice president of intellectual property and licensed products at New Balance. "I've been speaking with our development people about the idea to see if the concept itself has merit."

Haddad said the absence of a patent could be a roadblock.

"With a patent, it's a whole different thing," Haddad said. "You have legal protection. When it's not issued yet, it becomes much more complicated, almost impossible to work with unless as a company you wanted to take a risk on it."

Should a major company such as New Balance decide not to take on Shamir's shoe, he would seek investors to serve as partners in the drive toward mass production. "What we have now is a modified commercial shoe," Shamir said, "so we need to create a prototype which would be completely our own from start to finish."

fake rolex

Shamir estimated that it could cost him as much as $100,000 if he was going to patent, manufacture, market and distribute the shoe independently.

In the early stages of his research, Shamir said he bought a pair of standard shoes and modified the left, leaving the right as purchased, and he walked with them for about an hour.

"Ten or 15 minutes into the walk, depending on how briskly I actually went, I felt it in my left leg, that it was actually working more than the right," he said. "The set of muscles in the rear of the upper leg (hamstring) is the first to be affected. Then the bum, the ankle and the calf, in that order."

Shamir said others
embroidered patches tested the shoes and had similar results. "My objective is to make it between 5 and 20 percent more effective than if you were wearing standard shoes or sneakers," Shamir said. "I would like to target it at the office worker, students and housewives who are not working physically and having them use these shoes. ... They will automatically exercise while doing the standard things they do, anyway."

Brogues are back in vogue; Kar

WHO'D have thought it? After years of increasingly extreme spikeheeled footwear being deemed au courant, there has been a backlash among the bright young things on Planet Fashion, who are adopting brogues as their footwear of choice.

Succumbing to the comfort and timeless style of this sturdy British classic, trendsetting fashionistas are donning sensible flats to go about their daily business.

London's style leaders have turned the masculine image on its head, sexing it up with knee socks, flirty skirts and boyfriend jackets.

MTV presenter, model and hip young thing Alexa Chung took her place rolex replica in the front row at the Margaret Howell catwalk show during London Fashion Week in an androgynous ensemble of black and white co-respondent shoes, mannish shirt, skinny leather treggings (a cross between trousers and leggings) and a studded Miu Miu bucket bag.

At the Burberry show, kooky model-of-the-moment Agyness Deyn teamed her classic black brogues with sheer black pop socks and a mint silk puffball dress. Harry Potter actress Emma Watson is a fan, too, as are actresses Selma Blair and Sienna Miller.

I am thrilled that brogues are back in vogue. At 5ft 2in, I can't deny the allure of heels with their leg-lengthening effect. But as a busy mum, I've never been one for tottering around precariously during the day. Those delicious satin concoctions from Jimmy Choo are for weddings and parties, while the dependable brogue has served me well as my day-to-day footwear for the best part of two decades. I've grown to be passionate about these most sensible of shoes. My father, proud of his time in the RAF, always said you could judge a person by their shoes. As a little girl, I would watch as he buffed the black leather to a beautiful finish.

As a teenager, I bought my first pair of brogues: a pair of size three-and-a-half tan leather Oxfords.

It was the beginning of an extensive and ever-increasing collection that is a cherished part of my wardrobe. Deborah Carre, who partners James Ducker running bespoke shoemaking business CarreDucker, is another fan. 'Over the past two years, we've had an increasing number of women interested in our made-to-measure shoes with brogue detailing and brogue-style boots, so we're launching a collection next month designed for the female market,' she says.

Each pair of CarreDucker brogues is handcrafted using traditional artisan techniques, and requires two or three fittings. But they also require a hefty bank balance -- they start at [pounds sterling]1,500 a pair. Christian Louboutin and Rupert Sanderson have reinterpreted brogues this season as softer jazz shoes. But for those of us whose budget do not stretch to such luxury, Topshop has a fantastic brogue section on its website, offering 19 styles for budget conscious, fashion-savvy shoppers.

So with something for all budgets, it's investment dressing at its finest.

Brown and Zola are really put

Byline: ByMark Ryan

HULL CITY 3 Cole (27, og), Zayette (44), Bullard (45) WEST HAM 3 Franco (5), Collison (11), Da Costa (69) NO wonder they reckon Premier League management can seriously damage your health.

Blackburn's Sam Allardyce, now needing heart surgery, cannot be the only boss suffering.

Picture Phil Brown after 11 minutes at the KC Stadium, his team giving goals away as though they wanted him to be unemployed by Christmas. Then step into Gianfranco Zola's shoes, as he watched victory turn into near defeat, destroyed by bad luck, stupidity and rough justice in that order.

rolex fake

And just when they were preparing to rename his club Waste Ham, salvation came in the form of Manuel Da Costa's ugly left boot.

Hull, reduced to 10 men by then, had dithered in defence to throw away a victory of their own.

Imagine the blood pressure levels on the bench as Hammers substitiute Luis Jimenez almost stole all the points back in the dying minutes, only to find the side-netting.

And the hearts jumping as Junior Stanislas headed over from so near the Hull goal that grandmas nationwide would have fancied their chances.

It was marvellous fun if you were a neutral. Carlton Cole squandered a fine fifthminute chance. No matter, Stanislas swung in the resulting corner for Guillermo Franco to head his team's opener.

Hull keeper Matt Duke seemed to freeze at the cleverness of it all. Franco's confidence soared and six minutes later he produced the pass of the match to leave Jack Collison an 11th-minute invitation.

The young midfielder duly accepted to loop his header goalwards, with Duke stranded in no man's land. 'Two-nil to the Cockney Boys' as the Hammers fans sang. At that point only the precise timing of Hull manager Brown's dismissal seemed up for debate, because the result wasn't.

The visitors' mistake was to underestimate another Londoner, Jimmy Bullard, who decided to chase a lost cause as if it were a matter of personal pride. His first freekick just about knocked out Scott Parker. His second free-kick was on target in the 27th minute, though it probably would not have beaten Robert Green had Cole not intervened with his head. The deflection proved fatal and Hull were back in it.

Bullard let Stephen Hunt whip the home side's next telling setpiece just before the break. West Ham's dozy defence watched as Kamil Zayatte arrived with exquisite timing to apply the killer touch. The colour returned to Brown's heavily-tanned face. If Zola was exasperated at that point, he was near despair in first- half rolex replica injury-time.

Referee Mark Clattenburg, never shy, pointed to the spot when Craig Fagan fell at Julien Faubert's feet.

That won him some attention, though some officials might have ruled the 'offending' contact was initiated by the striker as he backed into his opponent. Up stepped Bullard, who showed once again how well he can clip a ball. Green dived low, Bullard aimed high and Hull were ahead.

But Brown's torment was not over because eight minutes after the interval Bernard Mendy was correctly dismissed for tripping Scott Parker, who was racing through on goal. And in the 69th minute a Stanislas corner brought suicidal defending and Da Costa achieved parity.

Who would be a Premier League manager? All of us, of course. But it would often hurt.
