Kite traders thrive on 'killer

AMRITSAR: Dancing to dhol beats, eating revaris and flying kites - associated with traditional Lohri celebrations have come with a difference this year. Chinese plastic cords used for flying kites that were earlier imported from China but are now produced in the domestic market, have left kite-flyers with "blood on their hands".

Available in the market as Chinese manjah (thread), the abrasive-coated thread with cotton base has left many a frenzied and zealous kite flyer with cuts on hands. "The abrasions and cuts left by a Chinese twine take much longer to heal than those inflicted by a traditional kite flying thread," claimed Dr Rakesh Luthra, a local practitioner who has treated several youths for injuries on fingers this kite season. It even leads to infection, he added.

Corroborating his claims, Raman, a local businessman, revealed that paper bag printing the incisions caused by the Chinese manjah had turned so fatal in the case of his 12-year-old nephew that he was left with a severed finger. "The incident happened last year and we had to get the sliced limb stitched together. We have been wiser this year," he added.

Bhau, who has been manufacturing the traditional cotton dor (kite flying thread) for the last 30 years, pointed out the difference. "Unlike the cotton was used for making kite threads. "Plastic is mixed with iron particles so that it does not snap easily. It is hardly safe and can even kill a person if not handled with care. Nevertheless, it has affected my business," he said.

Speaking about the changing trends, Pawan, who deals in Chinese thread, said, "Only 1% of the customers ask for the traditional cord, as it is brochure printing three times expensive than the Chinese one." For Reprint Rights: timescontent.com

Hong Kong to send one-athlete

Hong Kong to send one-athlete delegation to Winter Olympics

HONG KONG, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Han Yueshuang, born in the northern part of China, will be the only athlete representing Hong Kong, China in the upcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver, team official said on Monday.

It was the second time the 28-year-old short track skater had a chance to compete in the Olympic Games, but she was not happy about that.

"I was not preparing for the Olympics as it was my teammate who won the quota," said Han. "I felt so sorry and so sad for her."

Wang Xinyue, former all-around Replica fendi wholesale junior national champion of China, finished seventh in the women's 1000-meter event in the ISU (International Skating Union) World Cup short track last November to ensure a ticket for Hong Kong, China to Vancouver Olympics.

However, the 22-year-old Wang has to be replaced by her teammate in the delegation due to insufficient residential time in Hong Kong for a permanant identification, which was required by the International Olympic Committee in the Olympic Games.

"I came here only for the Olympics, so I was really upset," said Wang, born in the "ice city" Harbin and moved to Hong Kong in 2007. "I am now in my best time, and you'd never know what would happen in four years."

Han said she knew exactly how her "little sister" felt about the result, which was described as a dream shattered.

"We pushed ourselves catalog printing so much in the track every time only for a ticket and I almost had the same bad luck last time," she said.

Han, till holding the China's national record in the women's 3,000m event, joined the Hong Kong team in 2002 and almost missed the Torino Olympics in 2006 because of the same reason after she won a ticket herself.

President of the Hong Kong Olympic Committee Fok Tsun-ting Timothy finally persuaded IOC president Jacques Rogge to make an exception for the subtropical city, which allowed Han to skate for Hong Kong, China in Torino.

Han, whose best performance in Torino was a 18th in the 1,000m event, had little expectation for her second attempt.

"To tell the truth, I was yet prepared physically nor mentally," she said.

Han and tag heuer replica Wang would go back to Harbin to train with the Heilongjiang provincial team as there were no standard skating course in Hong Kong.

Berjaya-BYD small car plan mee

BERJAYA Corp Bhd appears to have reached a dead end with its plan to manufacture small cars in Malaysia.

The government does not plan to relax rules under the National Automotive Policy, which only allows new manufacturing licences for cars of 1.8 litres and above.

BCorp wants to partner China's BYD Auto to develop 1-litre right- hand drive cars for the Asean market.

"The National Automotive Policy is very clear, there is no exception (to the requirement of above 1.8-litre capacity).

"Malaysia is already making big concessions to allow foreign brands to be assembled here," International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said.

Last week, BCorp and BYD Auto signed a memorandum of understanding to develop BYD's F0 model. F0 retails at between US$4,000 (RM13,778) and US$5,000 (RM17,222) in China.

BYD Auto, which counts famous US investor Warren Buffet among its shareholders, is the fourth biggest carmaker in China by volume, after Volkswagen, General Motors Corp and Toyota. Last year, BYD Auto sold 450,000 vehicles.

BCorp executive director Francis Lee had said that the company will seek a licence from the Malaysian government to set up the assembly plant.

Under the recently revised National Automotive Policy, Malaysia lifted a freeze on car manufacturing licences, but only for models above 1.8 litres.

Mukhriz said he was not aware of BCorp's application.

He was speaking to reporters after witnessing the signing of a management and branding agreement between Ascenteus Holdings Sdn Bhd, Davanam Constructions Sdn Bhd and GHM Ltd in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Berjaya Group holds 51 per cent of Changan Berjaya Auto Sdn Bhd, a joint venture with China's ChangAn Auto Co Ltd, to distribute Changan Era cars here.

Berjaya, China's BYD plan plan

SHENZEN (China): Berjaya Corp Bhd (BCorp) plans to set up a manufacturing plant in Malaysia to build right-hand-drive (RHD) vehicles for Chinese carmaker BYD Auto Co Ltd.

Yesterday, both parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop BYD's RHD F0 1-litre model for the Malaysian and Asean markets.

BCorp executive director Francis Lee said the company will seek a licence from the Malaysian government to set up the plant.

Under the revised National Automotive Policy announced at the end of last year, Malaysia lifted a freeze on car manufacturing licences, but only for models above 1.8 litres.

"We are preparing to approach the Malaysian government to apply for the car manufacturing licence. We have a good case to put on the table," Lee told reporters at the signing ceremony held at BYD's headquarters here.

BYD, which counts famous US investor Warren Buffet among its shareholders, is the fourth biggest carmaker in China by volume, after Volkswagen, General Motors Corp and Toyota.

Last year, BYD sold 450,000 vehicles.

The tie-up would promote Malaysia as a regional hub in car manufacturing, assembly and distribution.

Lee expressed hopes of finalising a deal with BYD this year.

The MOU includes a feasibility study on the conversion of the F0's left-hand-drive version to RHD and related research and development.

If successful, BCorp will build the plant on a 40ha site in Bukit Tagar, Selangor.

The land is part of the 6,480ha that Bcorp bought from French group Soc Fin in the mid-1990s.

There is also an option, initially, to undertake contract assembly of the FO model using an existing plant with excess capacity. BCorp has a 15 per cent stake in Inokom's plant in Kulim, Kedah.

"We will take things one step at a time. Eventually, we will bring in more BYD models, including new energy vehicles," Lee said.

The idea would be for BCorp to tap incentives offered by the local government for green-technology vehicles.

Meanwhile, BYD marketing manager Paul Lin said it hopes to capture 5 per of the RHD passenger car market.

"RHD passenger cars make up about 15 per cent of the global passenger car market, with Asean accounting for over one million vehicles," he said.

Apart from Asean, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK are among countries with RHD markets.

BYD's gas-powered cars, F0 and F3, are China's top sellers.

The Chinese manufacturer of batteries and cars aims to become the market leader in new energy vehicles (EV).

Its EV model, F3DM, operates as a plug-in hybrid vehicle, while the soon-to-be-launched e6 will be the first pure-electric vehicle.

The e6 will be launched in China in the first quarter, and in the US by year-end.

University Exam Fakers Deporte

Byline: Sam Dimmer

TWO Chinese nationals are to be deported after being caught trying to take entrance exams to Warwick University for other people.

Jian Liu, aged 26, and 28-year-old Minzheng Du were being paid to sit the English language tests and had used other people's passports to trick their way in.

But the scam was spotted by campus staff during the exams on December 10 last year, and they challenged the pair.

Liu and Du were charged with possession of false documents with intent and both pleaded guilty.

Clip in human hair extensions

Both had long-term visas to stay in the UK but at Coventry Crown Court yesterday Recorder Nicholas Paines QC sentenced both to six months in prison followed by immediate deportation back to China. First in court Liu - a Warwick University graduate - wept openly as his solicitor revealed that he is the son of a provincial Chinese government boss and said his arrest had "brought shame" on the family.

Defence counsel Soli Osman said: "Every day he regrets the action he took. His father is deeply upset with him and he has upset his family.

"Now all he wishes is for the end of his sentence, to return home and to face his family where he will have to bow his head in shame.

"A letter has been sent from his father showing deep, deep disappointment. Everyone in his community knows what has happened.

"Whilst our cultures are markedly different honour is significant.

"This is a significant stain which he will have to bear when he returns home."

Liu would have received just pounds 200 if he had successfully passed the English test, the court was told. The man who he was taking it for, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has also been arrested in relation to the incident. Mr Recorder Paines QC said: "You made a bargain with this country when you came here to work.

"The bargain you made was to behave... on this occasion you did not do that."

Immediately after Liu was sentenced Du's case was heard,
embroidered patches and prosecutor Kathryn Roughton confirmed that the pair had been caught in the same exam - and may have both been recruited by the same agency.

"What he had done was to read an advert in a free Chinese newspaper offering work.

"He contacted the agency and was told to take the test," she said.

Du, in the country to complete a computing PHD at Imperial College London, would have received pounds 500 if he had successfully passed the test.

Before the test he had worked on a project aiming to perfect body scanning technology for the elderly.
