Hempfield Community Days puts

Creating a sense of community in a small town can happen almost effortlessly. In a sprawling township like Hempfield? Not so much.

"The township is so diverse and so large, it's hard to get everyone together," says Patrick Karnash, event coordinator for Hempfield Community Days. The festival, which takes place this Saturday and Sunday at Hempfield Park, "was originally intended as a way for the township supervisors to give something back to the residents. It's a way to get the community together."

Every year, the festival attracts around 15,000 visitors with its free concerts, fireworks, food, vendors and children's activities. This year, Hempfield Community Days promises to draw even more people with its expanded offerings.

The festival is "growing in every respect," Karnash says. The car show is bigger, the fireworks will be more impressive and there will be more vendor booths to visit. The 45 or so booths, arranged along the shady paved paths of the park, will offer crafts such as handmade jewelry, dolls, face painting and Native American dreamcatchers, as well as commercial displays by Coca-Cola, Best Buy and other sponsors. Food vendors will offer everything from corn dogs and funnel cakes to the popular fresh-cut french fries made by the Adamsburg Fire MBT shoes Department.

A favorite attraction for young families is the Kids' Zone, which this year is triple the size of previous years and includes additional activities for older children. "Families are the demographic we are looking for," Karnash says. "Most of the new people moving into the township are people with young children."

Kids' Zone will have nine inflatable structures, games, an obstacle course and crafts. For a small fee, children are admitted to all Kids' Zone activities.

Additional children's activities will be provided by the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library. Diane Ciabattoni of the circulation staff says the library will have "an informational booth with children's activities. We'll have a craft, a tattoo, a game with prizes, balloons and a book raffle," all free. Adults and children can register to win one of four books, two for adults and two for kids. Every year, the library staff looks forward to hosting the activities.

"We enjoy it," Ciabattoni says. "It's nice to get out and provide a service to the community."

The free concerts and entertainment top off the festival's offerings. Saturday's special features are the Chris Higbee Project country music concert at 8:15 p.m. followed by a Zambelli fireworks show that will be the festival's largest one yet.

Highlights for Sunday begin with a car show from 2 to 5 p.m. with more than 100 vehicles expected. Johnny Angel and the Halos will present an oldies concert from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Home where the only living thi

AFTER 16 years, it can be difficult to uproot and move on from a happy home. But for Christopher and Verna Sales, the time has come.

Are you with a to sell? thesentinel.co.uk The couple are planning to leave their impressive detached stone house in order to emigrate to America, where Verna is originally from. And although it will be a wrench to tear themselves away from the comfortable living space and spectacular scenery available at Ellastone House, they are looking forward to the next chapter in their lives.

Retired Thomson pilot Christopher, aged 58, says: "We originally moved here because of my job. I was working out of Manchester, and this area was perfect because we wanted to be somewhere central, but also in the country. This is a very individual property - I think the builders had a mini Chatsworth House in mind when it was constructed."

Sixty-one-year-old Verna, who is retiring from her job as a manager for a support and learning network in Macclesfield, adds: "But it's now time to go. We had two border collies for 14 years who have now passed away, and this house is perfect for dogs. We're going to Coach handbags emigrate to the States, where we have family." Ellastone House was built in 1981 in a Jacobean style, and Christopher and Verna are its second owners. They have made a number of changes, including adding a conservatory just over two years ago, and creating a patio area next to it.

The property is approached through an electric gate and via a long drive made from slate chips transported from Wales. More than 16 acres of fields and gardens surround the house, and there are also outbuildings which can be used as a garage. The double front door is set back within an impressive stone archway forming the porch, and opens into a large entrance hall, with access to the dining room, drawing room, an archway to further living space, and stairs to the first floor.

Once inside the entrance hall, to the left is the dining room, which is large enough to accommodate at least eight people around a table. Opposite is the very spacious drawing room, which contains an impressive Minster fireplace - fully working - and is a great space for a party.

"If we have guests, we tend to entertain them in this room," says Christopher. "The living room is where the television is, so we don't have that distraction in here. And it's a really big room, so perfect for entertaining."

A hallway leads from the entrance hall to the kitchen, sitting room, and downstairs WC, containing a hand basin and toilet, and has a window with clear glass.

Christopher said: "We're not exactly isolated - Leek is eight miles away by car - but the only living things close by are wildlife.

agent property Email us at "We opted against frosted glass as the privacy isn't an issue, and we'd rather have the light coming in." Next door to the WC is the sitting room, containing a brick fireplace and tiled hearth and a wood burning stove. The floor is tiled - as is the hallway and kitchen - which, combined with the light streaming in through the windows, gives it a very clean and airy feel. At the other end of the hallway is the spacious kitchen. In here is an oil fired range Herve Leger Dress - used to heat the house and water as well as for cooking - set within a brick fireplace. There are a range of cupboards with an Italian granite worktop above, a Belfast sink, a separate electric cooker, integrated fridge and freezer, and walk-in pantry. There is also a utility room attached to the kitchen, with further cupboard s

Rabbi Sacks says UK Jews 'dism

The Jewish community in Britain was "dismayed" by recent comments made by Prime Minister David Cameron regarding the Gaza Strip, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Tiffany Charms chief rabbi of the British Commonwealth, said on Sunday.

Cameron met with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on July 27, and during a press conference the two held described Gaza as a "prison camp."

During a Shabbat sermon at St John's Wood synagogue this weekend, Sacks urged Cameron to maintain "balance" when discussing the Middle East.

"In a wide ranging sermon, the chief rabbi made a passing reference to the dismay many in the Jewish community and far beyond feel about the prime minister's comments on Gaza," The Telegraph quoted the spokeswoman for Sacks as saying.

"The chief rabbi emphasized the importance that previous prime ministers have always placed on displaying balance, even when being forthright," the spokeswoman said.

During his meeting with Erdogan, Cameron also criticized the Israel Navy's May 31 raid on the Gaza protest flotilla as "completely unacceptable."

"The situation in Gaza has to change. Humanitarian goods and people must flow in both directions," he said. "Gaza cannot and must not be allowed to remain a prison camp."

Sacks was accused by Conservatives in the past as being loyal to Labor, after he was granted peerage by then- prime minister Gordon Brown in 2009.

Cameron's remarks were also criticized by a leading pro-Israel group from his own political camp last week.

According to The Guardian, Stuart Polak, director of the Conservative Friends of Israel, said that "in calling Gaza a prison camp, [Cameron] has failed to address Hamas's role in creating the Gaza we see today."

Israeli Ambassador to the UK Mbt Shoes Ron Prosor issued a statement immediately following Cameron's visit to Turkey, saying, "The people of Gaza are the prisoners of the terrorist organization Hamas. The situation in Gaza is the direct result of Hamas's rule and priorities.

"We know that the prime minister would also share our grave concerns about our own prisoner in the Gaza Strip, Gilad Schalit, who has been held hostage there for over four years, without receiving a single Red Cross visit."

Rabbi uses rap to break barrie

He isn't a rabbi in the typical sense of the word, but David Lazerson is nevertheless known as the "Rappin' Reggae Rabbi."

Why?

Because since the 1970s, he's developed a reputation as an internationally-celebrated musician and educator acclaimed for his work with special needs students in gritty, inner-city schools.

"The word 'rabbi' just means 'teacher,'" he said. "In a way, it fits in good with my career."

His career has been all over the place. He's performed before Congress, at Woodstock reunions, even with the Grateful Dead.

He got his reputation for rap and reggae by using those musical forms to reach special needs kids in inner city Buffalo in the '70s and '80s. It was their music, he said, so it tiffany silver bracelet became his music.

"Back in those days, I used rap to help teach reading and even math," he said. "And then I started writing rap tunes about racial harmony."

He's an expert on that subject, too. The movie "Crown Heights," starring Howie Mandel as Lazerson, recounts his role in healing race relations after the 1991 race riots in Brooklyn.

Lazerson will be the keynote speaker at Sunday's annual Chabad at the Beaches dinner. The Times-Union talked to him by phone Thursday.

PSV Eindhoven

IT TAKES QUITE AN EFFORT TO COMPREHEND YOUR CAREER. HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU DO?

I like to think of it all as a work in progress. 'Getting better all the time,' as the Beatles used to sing. I thank God for all of the blessings in my life.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO ALL THESE DIFFERENT FORMS OF MUSIC?

I've always loved music. As a kid, my parents would always have on these great jazz musicians. They made sure we all got music lessons. My sisters and I were all initially forced to play piano. Then my parents gave in and let me take drum lessons. ... They'd take me to different concerts and cultural events.

HOW DID YOU COME TO PLAY WITH THE GRATEFUL DEAD?

I was in the right place at the right time. That was a total fluke. ... I was on stage at the end of their concert they did in Buffalo, playing percussion with probably 20 other college students. The drummer just dropped off the chair. He was high as a kite, just laughing and stuff. I picked up the drumsticks and played for seven to eight minutes. That would have been 1971. It's a pretty wild story.

IS THERE A SPIRITUAL DIMENSION TO THE MUSIC, EVEN THE RAP?

In Hasidic terms, how the Torah refers to music, it's called the language of the soul. It makes these deep, inner connections for people. ... Music is a great way to reach people and to teach people. I try to reach out to Jews and Gentiles with that message - to be proud of who you are and to do positive things with your life.

WHAT'S YOUR TALK GOING TO BE ABOUT SUNDAY NIGHT?

I'm going to share stories from when I taught in the inner city. My day job is working with special ed kids, which is one of my loves. I've seen what music can do for that population. It's just phenomenal.

HOW DOES MUSIC HELP IN A TEACHING SITUATION?

A kid can be in a vegetative state. You play music, give them an instrument to hold or a switch that will operate a percussion ins

VHSL LEGEND FINALLY HONORED

Have you ever seen Superman fly?

I have, and I'll never forget the first time.

It was the night during the winter of 1986-87 I saw Calvin Talford sail across a basketball floor in a Castlewood High School basketball uniform.

He had just missed a shot on the other end, hesitated because he thought he had been fouled, then sprinted upcourt when no call was made. A Gate City High player took a jump shot at the other end. Talford had no chance to block the shot, but he tried anyway, soaring 20-some feet in the air like a Nike-wearing comet.

He didn't get any leather, but there was a loud thud. It was my jaw hitting the bleachers because I had just witnessed the most spectacular high school athlete I've ever seen.

Think you had a good senior year in high school? Try matching Talford's at Castlewood in 1987-88.

cheap_Suhali Leather_shop_usa_uk_52

-- He averaged 30 points a game in basketball as senior, once outscoring a Chilhowie team by himself with 59 points and six dunks in a 99-56 win.

-- He set VHSL Group A track and field records in the high jump (7 feet), long jump (23-11 3/4) and triple jump (49-8 1/2) that still stand.

-- He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies after a prep baseball career that included a home run on the first pitch of the game in the Region C semifinals.

-- He came out for football as a senior and scored all five of his team's touchdowns in a playoff victory over Fort Chiswell.

The 6-foot-4 Talford -- the 1988 Timesland male athlete of the year -- had absurd leaping ability. He led East Tennessee State to four NCAA tournament berths and won the collegiate slam dunk title in 1992. He played professionally overseas, dunking on five continents.

Later this month, Talford will finally get a well-deserved spot in the Virginia High School Hall of Fame, entering with a class that includes NFL star Thomas Jones (Powell Valley) and Blacksburg soccer coach Shelley Blumenthal.

Talford was a show-stopper. At the 1988 Region C track meet, he somehow wound up in a one-on-one impromptu dunk contest on a goal behind the stands at Auburn High School.

The meet was still going on, but hardly anyone cared. Most of the spectators were standing on the top row watching the show outside the stadium.

Soon Talford will be inside the VHSL Hall.

It's about time.

WILLIAM FLEMING 23 George Washington 21. Fleming hasn't played at GW since a 28-0 loss to the Eagles in 2000.

SALEM 21, Blacksburg 0. Blacksburg's last win against the Spartans in Salem Stadium was a 19-14 triumph in 1994.

PULASKI COUNTY 37, Cave Spring 14. Pulaski is 4-2 in the last four games against Cave Spring including a 49-14 loss in 2000 when both were Group AAA schools.

CHRISTIANSBURG 28, Hidden Valley 21. Hidden Valley's first varsity football game was a loss to Christiansburg in 2002.

NORTHSIDE 31, Alleghany 13. These two schools played one of the wildest Timesland games ever, a 53-52 triple-overtime win by the Vikings in 2004.

WILLIAM BYRD 20, Lord Botetourt 17. Botetourt's last trip to Vinton produced a 17-14 win that clinched a playoff berth in 2006.
