THE two elderly women seemed respectable enough as they strolled around a stately home gardens on a pensioners' outing.

But the pair had more on their minds than just enjoying the gardens - they planned to pinch some of its prized plants to take home with them.
Police were called after the green-fingered raiders, aged 87 and 85, were caught red-handed pulling up the plants at Aberglasney Gardens, near Carmarthen, West Wales.
Their handbags were searched - and seven plants including a rare dodecathon worth [pound]40 were discovered.

Graham Rankin, gardens director of operations, said: 'It really isn't the sort of thing you would expect from two old ladies.

'I couldn't believe my eyes as they went around picking up plants along the way.
'They were keen gardeners and if they had asked the head gardeners for cuttings then we would have helped. But pulling up whole plants by their roots is just not on.' A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman said statements were taken from the unnamed duo before they were allowed to board their coach home.
He added: 'We decided not to prosecute the women after taking their age into consideration.'
